Assistant Professor of Speech
The Department of Theatre and Speech at Hillsdale College invites applications for a full-time, two-year visiting position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Speech, beginning August 2012. This position may be converted to tenure track with credit for time served, subject to performance and availability of funding. Evidence of a strong commitment to excellence in teaching is a must. The Department is seeking a communication generalist, with a grounding in rhetoric. Teaching responsibilities may include fundamentals of public communication, organizational communication, leadership and group dynamics, business communication, interpersonal communication, rhetoric and logic. All candidates should have some expertise in rhetoric and public address, and the ability to teach a course in the Western tradition of rhetoric. The ability to teach logic is desired, but not required. To be considered at the assistant level, candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication, or expect to have completed their degree by August 15, 2012. The teaching load is 3/3, with an average class size of 20 students. Hillsdale College seeks educators who place teaching first, in balance with research and service. Applicants should submit in hard copy a cover letter of application that presents (a) evidence of strong undergraduate teaching skills; (b) a statement of teaching philosophy; and (c) a detailed response to the College's Mission Statement that includes a discussion of the candidate's ability to teach in the light of its commitments.
