German Department

Note from the Department Chair

Greetings and a heart-felt Willkommen to Hillsdale College’s German Department!

My name is Dr. Eberhard Geyer, department chairman and professor of German. I would like to invite you to take a good look at our comprehensive curriculum of language, literature and culture courses, at our exciting study programs in Germany, and at the many fun and educational activities of our German Club and Delta Phi Alpha, German National Honorary.

As a student taking German courses at Hillsdale, you would find the congenial atmosphere of a relatively small, closely knit program guided by highly qualified and motivated faculty. You would become a member of an elite group of very dedicated students who share a sense of pride in the ability to converse in another major Western language.

German Studies at Hillsdale effortlessly combine a true dedication to the liberal arts through a demanding curriculum of literature and culture courses with the practical means of learning the most widely spoken language in Europe. Students who wish to study overseas are encouraged to participate in our popular Summer Language and Culture Program at Würzburg, or in our Exchange Program with Saarland University in Saarbrücken. Departmentally approved summer courses available from Goethe Institut throughout Germany, offer additional off-campus study venues.

The German faculty–quite unabashedly–believe the German Program at Hillsdale College to be one of the most promising small college departments in the region because of its demanding academic standards, the high quality of its graduates, the excellent enrollment rate in Germany study programs, and its spirited teaching and learning.

I invite you with confidence to join our community!

Sincerely,

Eberhard Geyer, PhD
