German Scholarships
Four College scholarships are available to students studying German at Hillsdale or abroad:
- The German Department Freshman Scholarship
- The German Major Scholarship
- German Study Abroad Scholarship
- Lilian “Libby” Rick Study Abroad Scholarship

The German Department Freshman Scholarship
Awarded to an incoming student who demonstrates dedication to the study of German and a commitment to pursuing a minor or major degree in German language and literature.
Description
The scholarship draws its funds from an ongoing donation in general support of German Studies by Mr. Lucas Wegman of Rhode Island.
Awards are determined by the German faculty on a case by case basis.
The scholarship is renewable for an additional year.
Requirements
- “A-” average in German
- 3.5 GPA
- Application letter with statement of purpose
- Letter from German teacher/professor
The German Major Scholarship
Awarded to a student in GRM 202 or above who is committed to obtaining a major degree in German language and literature
Description
The scholarship draws its funds from an ongoing donation in general support of German Studies by Mr. Lucas Wegman of Rhode Island.

- Expressed support of a member of the German faculty
German Study Abroad Scholarship
Eligibility
To be eligible for the German Study Abroad Scholarship, the applicant must:
- Have completed four semesters of foreign language or the equivalent by the time of his/her study abroad.
- Be recommended by a Hillsdale College language professor.
- Intend to enroll in a Hillsdale College approved study abroad program. Any award will be contingent upon acceptance of its recipient in the approved program.
- Demonstrate financial need.
How to Apply
- The applicant must submit an application that includes his/her current GPA as well as his/her average in the German courses taken at Hillsdale.
- The application should include signatures certifying that the four above criteria have been met.
- The application should be accompanied by a letter explaining the student’s reason for wanting to study abroad and if possible stating plans for further study and career.
Awarding of Scholarship
- Decision for awarding of scholarships will be made by members of the German Department employing the following criteria:
- The merit of the petition as demonstrated by the applicant having fulfilled the above criteria and having demonstrated superior scholarship and character at Hillsdale.
- The merit of the applicant’s letter of intent.
- Applications must be submitted by February 15 of the academic year before the scholarship will be used. The committee will announce the awards well in advance of the planned study so that applicants may have sufficient time to prepare for their study abroad.
L.L. Rick Study Abroad Scholarship
Eligibility
To be eligible for the L.L. Rick Study Abroad Scholarship, the applicant must:
- Have completed four semesters of foreign language or the equivalent by the time of his/her study abroad.
- Be recommended by a Hillsdale College language professor.
