Department of Music

Introduction

The Hillsdale College Music Department has decked the campus halls with the sound of music from its very beginning in 1844. Our College Choir holds the distinction of being Michigan’s oldest collegiate choir. Today, the music faculty is dedicated to providing our students with a well-rounded experience, balancing scholarship and performance within a liberal arts environment.

Housed in the newly constructed John and Dede Howard Music Building (completed 2003) the doors of the Music Department are open to any student regardless of his or her chosen major. Approximately thirty percent of the entire Hillsdale student body participates in music activities at some level. All music performances of campus ensembles and guest artists are free to students and the public. Over the past several years our music ensembles have generated a large, enthusiastic audience from the campus and the surrounding community, often demanding multiple performances to accommodate the size of our crowds.

Majors and non-majors alike explore a wide range of musical activities such as performance (classical, contemporary and jazz), music history, music theory, composition, pedagogy, and music education. Come realize your musical potential with us, here at Hillsdale College!
