As part of the South African Internship Program, which is a collaborative effort between Hillsdale College and the Henry Doorly Zoo of Omaha, Nebraska, students and faculty currently conduct genetics research at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa located in Pretoria.  Made possible with a special contribution from Bill and Berniece Grewcock, our South African Internship Program allows junior/senior biology majors to work on groundbreaking research projects in conservation biology ranging from the molecular genetics of rare white lions to the genetic fingerprinting of cheetah.  Distinguished zoo director Dr. Lee G. Simmons of the Henry Doorly Zoo and noted researcher Dr. Naida Loskutoff have been instrumental in setting up this venture as well as in providing direction for our Hillsdale students (along with interested Hillsdale faculty).  Hillsdale students have been traveling to South Africa, working on a variety of research projects and visiting numerous game parks and preserves in South Africa for the last nine years.  The experience enhances their Hillsdale education and increases the likelihood of future successes.
