Chemistry

Overview

Chemistry is the study of the physical world around us on a molecular and atomic level.  It is the "central science" in that it bridges the foundational principles of physics with the large-scale components of biological or geological processes.  The understanding of chemical principles, appreciation of experimental methodology, and critical thinking skills are fundamental to a liberal education for all students, regardless of field of concentration.

For those who intend to pursue scientific endeavors as a vocation, the chemistry department at Hillsdale College provides a rigorous and personal education.  Students may earn a B.S. or B.A. in chemistry or biochemistry or may minor in either field.  The curriculum prepares students well for graduate studies, research and development, careers in the chemical industry and other technical fields, programs in medicine, dentistry, and allied health fields, or for teaching chemistry at the secondary level. The chemistry program at Hillsdale has been approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee on Professional Training and therefore provides students the opportunity to earn an ACS-certified degree.  All chemistry majors are required to perform research; those pursuing the ACS track must write a senior thesis based on significant laboratory research with a mentor.

As a small private college, Hillsdale offers the advantages of small classes, hands-on laboratory experience and personal attention. Our facilities are outstanding and are fully available to the undergraduate students for classes and research. Faculty are able to become familiar with each student's strengths and weaknesses and provide help and advice on an individual, personal basis.  The department is collegial and dedicated to developing outstanding scientists and citizens.  If you have questions about the Chemistry Department, please email Dr. Mark Nussbaum, Chair, or call (517) 607-2612.
