Senior Marsden Award

The Marsden Awards are made possible by Sullivan Marsden who is Professor Emeritus of Petroleum Engineering at Stanford University. Professor Marsden is interested in promoting quality research at the undergraduate level. He has endowed two prizes for outstanding research in chemistry at Hillsdale College.

This year’s senior award for outstanding research goes to Ben Bixenmann a major in Chemistry from Lincoln, NE. Last summer he performed research at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and isolated dUTPase from the Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus, crystallized it and analyzed the structure using x-ray diffraction. He plans on attending medical school after graduation and has already been accepted at the University of Nebraska and the University of Miami’s medical programs.

Junior Marsden Award

This year’s junior award for outstanding research goes to Kari Brewer a major in Chemistry from Houston, TX who is currently doing research with Dr. VanOrman. Her research involves the synthesis of small inorganic complexes that will be able to reversibly bind molecular oxygen.

American Institute of Chemists Award

The American Institute of Chemists Award honors an outstanding senior chemistry major. The candidate is nominated by the chemistry faculty “in recognition of a demonstrated record of ability, leadership, and professional promise”.

This year’s award goes to Elizabeth Seutter a senior chemistry major from Birch Run, MI who worked with Dr. Lee Baron and her research involved the effect of ethanol on the lipid and water-soluble components of developing chick embryos as analyzed with 13C NMR. Next fall, she will be starting in the nursing program at Grand Valley State University.

American Chemical Society Organic Chemistry Award

The purpose of the American Chemical Society's "Organic Chemistry Award" is to honor outstanding achievement in Organic Chemistry by a Chemistry major at each academic institution. The candidate is nominated by the chemistry faculty in recognition of the student's achievement in the classroom, laboratory and in chemical research. It is sponsored by the Polymer Education Committee and the American Chemical Society.

This year’s award goes to Zachary Kohley a junior chemistry major from Muskegon, MI for his outstanding performance in organic chemistry.

CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award

The CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award is given to a top student in the freshman chemistry program. The award consists of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics with a commemorative scroll mounted on the inside front cover. There were three winners this year: Amanda Gilchrist, Kira Landengerger, and Erle Pettus.
