For a major in German, students may pursue a Literature (A) or Language (B) Track:

(A) Literature Track: A major degree in German (Literature Track) requires a minimum of 24 credit hours beyond the 201 level and shall comprise GRM 202, a minimum of nine hours from the following:

GRM 303 German Composition, Conversation and Grammar I
GRM 304 German Composition, Conversation and Grammar II
GRM 350 Study in a German-Speaking Country
GRM 399 Advanced Written and Spoken German I
GRM 400 Advanced Written and Spoken German II

and at least four of the following literature courses:

GRM 412 Classical German Literature (The Age of Goethe)
GRM 413 Nineteenth-Century German Literature
GRM 414 Twentieth-Century German Literature
GRM 420 German Literature and Culture from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century
GRM 493 Seminar in German
for a minimum of 12 credit hours.

(B) Language Track: A major degree in German (Language Track) requires a minimum of 24 credit hours beyond the 201 level and shall comprise GRM 202, a minimum of nine hours from the following:

GRM 412 Classical German Literature (The Age of Goethe)
GRM 413 Nineteenth-Century German Literature
GRM 414 Twentieth-Century German Literature
GRM 420 German Literature and Culture from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century
GRM 493 Seminar in German

and at least four of the following language courses:

GRM 303 German Composition, Conversation and Grammar I
GRM 304 German Composition, Conversation and Grammar II
GRM 350 Study in a German-Speaking Country
GRM 399 Advanced Written and Spoken German I
GRM 400 Advanced Written and Spoken German II
for a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Students are required to complete successfully a comprehensive written and oral examination during the senior year. German majors are also encouraged to elect a second field of concentration to complement their language study.

Students pursuing German certification in elementary or secondary Teacher Education are subject to the College Catalog language of their year of entry.
