Opportunities for physical education activities and professional development are offered in the physical education program. Admission to the physical education major field of concentration does not guarantee subsequent admission to Teacher Education. All candidates for teacher certification must complete all of the education requirements.
Two credit hours (two semesters) of work in physical education activity courses are a requirement for graduation. An additional two activity courses may be taken as electives toward the 124 hours needed for a degree. For a comprehensive teaching major for grades K-12, which requires 36 hours, the student must take the following required courses:
BIO 308 Human Anatomy and Physiology
PED 122 History and Philosophy of Physical Education and Sport
PED 320 Methods of Teaching Physical Education I
PED 321 Methods of Teaching Physical Education II
PED 350 Measurement in Physical Education
PED 400 Kinesiology
PED 410 Organization and Administration
PED 480 Teaching of School Health
PED 490 Exercise Physiology
In addition, one swimming class, one dance class, a 300-level coaching class and two activity electives are required. This will leave three or four electives within the major.
All majors must also pass written and oral comprehensive exams during their senior year.
