Susan Gelman visits Hillsdale

September 12, 2002. Professor Susan Gelman, of the University of Michigan Department of Psychology, visited Hillsdale College and delivered a talk entitled: What's Essential in Children's Concepts.

Professor Gelman is one of the leading figures in developmental psychology today. Her talk addressed an issue central to many liberal arts disciplines: the nature of concepts. She presented evidence that children conceptualize categories as having essences.

The Hillsdale College Department of Psychology hosted Professor Gelman's visit, including a reception at which students and faculty from across the campus spoke with her over drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Jill Becker Visits Hillsdale

April 16, 2003. Professor Jill Becker of the University of Michigan Department of Psychology visited the Hillsdale campus and delivered a talk entitled "Sex, Drugs, and Neurotransmitters: A new look at how estrogen influences behavior" Professor Becker is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of neuroendocrinology.

Hillsdale psychology student Robert Hufnagel conducted research with Professor Becker in her laboratory during the summer months and arranged her visit to Hillsdale. Many students and faculty attended the talk and spoke with Professor Becker at a reception in her honor.

 

Lawrence Hirschfeld Speaks at Hillsdale

On March 30, 2004, Lawrence Hirschfeld, Professor of Psychology and Anthropology at the University of Michigan, presented on the Hillsdale campus a talk entitled: "What can autistic children teach us about how we understand others? Folk theories of mind and society"

Professor Hirschfeld presented evidence human minds are equipped with a Theory of Society Module that governs the way we think about the social world. His work in this area is revolutionizing the way psychologists understand the development of social cognition. Following his talk, students and faculty enjoyed the opportunity to speak with Professor Hirschfeld at a reception in his honor.
