Overview

The department of Theatre and Speech allows the student the opportunity to major in either area. The art of theatre is unique in its manner of focusing and reflecting the concerns of the society in which it exists. It is the most inclusive of the arts, calling upon all the elements of communication. As such, theatre training is invaluable not only for a career in the performing arts, but also as indispensable preparation for business, teaching, law or any other field that relies on effective communication. For its part, the Speech curriculum has as its main focus the history, theory, criticism, and performance of rhetoric. Public persuasion, as an area of study as well as a practiced skill, has been central to the human experience throughout the history of Western Civilization. The major in Speech follows in this Western tradition of equipping citizens with rhetorical understanding and ability.
