Every student who wishes to emphasize speech studies within the Theatre and Speech Department must take a "core" consisting of the following courses:

SPC 251 The Western Tradition of Rhetoric II
SPC 257 Advanced Public Speaking
SPC 275 The Performing Voice

Every student must select one of the following two:

CLS 311 Rhetoric and Persuasion in the Ancient World
SPC 250The Western Tradition of Rhetoric I

Every student must select one of the following two:

SPC 280 Speech Composition
THE 310 Playwriting: Sources and Methods

Every student must select two from the following list of courses:

SPC 260 Introduction to Broadcasting
SPC 270 Argumentation: Theory and Practice
SPC 354 Theories of Persuasion

One from the following:

SPC 463 Methods of Rhetorical Analysis

SPC 465 Political Rhetoric and the Electronic Media

SPC 301 Movies as Medium
SPC 303 Business Communication
SPC 304 Interpersonal Communication
SPC 356 Organizational Communication
SPC 360 Practicum in Broadcasting
SPC 370 Leadership in Group Dynamics

In the senior year, each student must successfully complete SPC 575, the project of which will serve as a speech thesis. This project will be chosen in conjunction with the director of Speech Studies. The project will combine research, analysis and written skills. The senior project may be undertaken in any area taught within the concentration:

Please Note: The following Speech courses cannot be counted toward the major: SPC 151(2)-451(2) (Debate) and SPC 161(2)-461(2) (Forensics).
