Saarland University Exchange Program at Saarbrücken, Germany

This College Exchange Program enables students to study at an internationally focused, reputable university for an immersive academic experience with German language and culture.

The university is located in southwestern Germany, in Saarbrücken, the capital city of Saarland, from where Paris and Luxemburg can be reached in less than two hours by train. In exchange, an equal number of students from Germany live and study at Hillsdale and contribute to the international flavor of the College.

Course of Study in Germany

Students may elect any field of study for which enrollment limits have not been reached and for which they are eligible.  It is however recommended that Saarland exchange students devote at least one third of their course work to German language and literature classes. Students must obtain grades (or grade equivalents) and evidence of hours taken in collaboration with the International Office at Saarland University. Such courses and grades will then be entered in the students’ Hillsdale College transcript.  Participants typically gain 15 credit hours per semester in Germany.

Recommended Preparatory Work

Students are strongly encouraged to attend the pre-semester intensive language course “Intensivsprachkurs Deutsch als Fremdsprache” offered by International Office at Saarland University.   This four-week-long intensive language and contemporary culture course prepares foreign students for the actual academic semester.  Students will receive Hillsdale College academic credits for successful completion.

Tuition and Fees

Scholarship aid is available.

All tuition and fees are paid directly to Hillsdale College. Most Hillsdale College scholarships and stipends are maintained during the semester at Saarland.

Participants register at Hillsdale as full-time students under the designation of UoS 300 (Saarland University).  Students who choose a one-semester course of study can attend only in the Spring-Summer semester (March-July).
