Hillsdale College’s Exchange Program with Saarland University affords Hillsdale students the opportunity to study at a very reputable German university as “non-degree, visiting students,” while remaining officially enrolled at Hillsdale College. To be eligible, a student must have at least junior standing, sufficient fluency in German to enter into German university courses, and maintain a 3.5 grade-point average in German. Students must be recommended for the exchange by Hillsdale's German Department and also demonstrate a high degree of social maturity.
Recommended Preparatory Work:
Students are strongly encouraged to attend the pre-semester intensive language study, “Internationaler Feriensprachkurs,” offered by the International Studies Office at Saarland University. This four-week-long intensive language course will prepare foreign students for the actual academic semester. Students will receive academic credits for successful completion.
Course of Study in Germany:
Students may elect any field of study for which enrollment limits have not been reached and for which they are eligible. It is however recommended that Saarland exchange students devote at least one third of their course work to German language and literature classes. Students must obtain grades (or grade equivalents) and evidence of hours taken in collaboration with the International Studies Office. These courses and grades will then be entered in the students’ Hillsdale College transcript. Participants typically gain 15 credit hours per semester in Germany.
Tuition and Fees:
All tuition and fees are paid directly to Hillsdale College. Students register at Hillsdale as full-time students under the designation of UoS 300 (Saarland University). Students who choose a one-semester course of study can attend only in the Spring/Summer Semester. (March-July).
Housing and Transportation:
Application, Release and Assumption of Risk Form, Health Disclosure and Insurance, Conduct:
Students must complete Hillsdale College's Off-Campus Study Forms and demonstrate to Hillsdale College and Saarland University sufficient health insurance coverage. All participating students are subject to rules and regulations of the host university.
