Hillsdale College’s Exchange Program with Universität Saarbrücken affords Hillsdale students the opportunity to study at a very reputable German university as “non-degree, visiting students,” while remaining officially enrolled at Hillsdale College and pursuing a BA degree. To be eligible, a student must have at least junior standing, sufficient fluency in German to enter into German university courses, and maintain a 3.5 grade-point average in German. In addition, students must be recommended for the exchange by the Hillsdale German Department and also demonstrate a high degree of social maturity.
Recommended Preparatory Work:
Students are strongly encouraged to attend the pre-semester intensive language study, “Studienkolleg,” offered by the International Studies Office. This four-week-long intensive language course will prepare foreign students for the actual academic semester (beginning March & September). Students will receive academic credits for successful completion. Passing the "PNdS" exam for credit would be considered a high academic honor.
Course of Study in Germany:
Students may elect any field of study for which enrollment limits have not been reached and for which they are eligible. It is however recommended that Saarbrücken students devote at least one third of their course work to German language and literature classes. Students must obtain grades (or grade equivalents) and evidence of hours taken in collaboration with the International Studies Office.
Tuition and Fees:
All tuition and fees are paid directly to Hillsdale College. Students register as full-time students under the designation of UoS 300 (University of Saarbrücken). Students who choose a one-semester course of study can attend Saarbrücken only in the Spring (March-July).
Housing and Transportation:
Application, Release and Assumption of Risk Form, Health Disclosure and Insurance, Conduct:
In addition to the German Department's recommendation, students must complete Hillsdale College's Off-Campus Study Application Form and Assumption of Risk Form and demonstrate to Hillsdale College and University of Saarbrücken sufficient health insurance coverage. All participating students are subject to rules and regulations of the host university.
