Computers need reliable power because power spikes and surges are the main source of hardware damage. It is highly recommended that every computer be plugged into a surge protector. If you rely more heavily on your computer, get a battery-powered UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), which gives you time to save your work in case of a sudden power outage. It also may be worthwhile to look into an antitheft device (such as a cable and padlock), especially if you have a laptop. These precautions generally cost between $15 and $50, but could save you many headaches.
