Digital Copyright Information

According to the Hillsdale College Reference Librarian, "this is a vague and emerging part of law," yet the most detailed guidelines are found in CONFU Guidelines for Digital Images.

Portion limitations set forth by the Guidelines include:

• up to 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less, of copyrighted motion media
• up to 10% or 1000 words, whichever is less, of copyrighted text material
• up to 10%, but no more than 30 seconds, of the music and lyrics from an individual musical work
• a photograph or illustration may be used in its entirety, but no more than five images from one artist or no more than 10% (or 15 images, whichever is less) from a collective words
• up to 10% or 2500 fields or cell entries, whichever is less, from a copyrighted database or data table
• you must include on the opening screen of a multimedia program a notice that certain materials are included under the fair use exemption of the U.S. Copyright Law and are restricted from further use
