- You are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of your computer and its components. ITS provides the service and support, but the student is responsible for his or her personal computer hardware needs.
- You need Microsoft Windows or MacOS. Other operating systems (OSes) may work, but we do not provide instructions for these operating systems. For more information about OS requirements, see the Minimum System Requirements.
- For connectivity in campus residences, you need an Ethernet adapter and a patch cable with RJ-45 connectors. (An RJ-45 connector looks like a telephone connector but is wider.) The bookstore sells patch cables up to 25 feet (7.62 meters) long.
- If you wish to use the campus wireless network with a laptop, you will also need a Wi-Fi-compliant network adapter. Because the wireless network is not available in residence halls, Wi-Fi is meant to supplement, not replace, your standard Ethernet connection.
- Keep the setup discs for your operating system, as well as for any additional hardware you have purchased. If you have trouble connecting to ResNet, the ITS help desk technician will likely need these discs.
