ResNet is not accessible through phone lines and dail-up connection. Also, the campus wireless network does not extend to the residence halls (except the Suites), and for security reasons wireless routers are prohibited in college housing. Students who wish to access the Internet from their dorm room must use a Network Interface Card (NIC) and patch cable.
Virtually all computers sold in the past several years come equipped with a NIC, so in most cases there is no need to purchase one.
Choosing a NIC:
If you don't know what type of NIC to buy, consult the user guides for your computer or call your computer manufacturer. You will need to purchase a model that fits in one of your computer's expansion slots and is compatible with your exiting hardware and operating system. Your manufacturer's tech support staff can assist you. If you tell them what model you have, they can tell you what card you need and which stores might carry it.
NICs for Wireless Connection on Campus:
Wireless connection is currently available in Mossey Library, Kendall Hall, Lane Hall and most areas of the Knorr Student Center, including Phillips Auditorium and the Dow Center. Most dorms are not configured for wireless connection.
You will need a PCMCIA 802.11b Wi-Fi compliant card. SMC wireless cards will not work on our network.
