Remote Access

Students: Please use these instructions to access your personal drive. The instructions on this page are for faculty and staff users.

Getting Started

It is now possible for faculty and staff members to access a remote desktop, as well as their personal folder (P: drive), their department folder (S: drive), and Business Teams (T: drive) from anywhere on the Internet.

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to the Hillsdale College website and click "Faculty & Staff".

You have two options at this point. You may initiate a remote session, giving you access to all of the network drives (P:, R:, S:, T:) as well as Datatel, the AS/400, Microsoft Office, and so on. Or you may choose to connect directly to a drive, such as your Personal Drive (P:), Department Drive (S:), or Business Teams (T:).

Full Remote Session

From the Faculty/Staff Resources page, click "Remote Desktop Connection".

Note to first time users: A Security Warning dialog box may appear the first time you arrive at this page which asks if you want to install and run "Remote Desktop ActiveX Control". You must choose Yes for this to work. If you pressed No by mistake then press F5 to refresh and have the dialog box appear again.

After entering your username and password, click Connect. If a warning box appears asking if you trust the computer you are connecting to, click Yes.

Once you are connected to the remote system, you may need to re-enter your username and password.

With a remote session, you can access all the your files stored on the Hillsdale College network without reentering your user name or password. Using a remote session is more efficient than connecting directly to a drive and is the recommended method for working remotely.

When you are finished with your session, simply click the Start Menu, then Log Off.

Connecting Directly to a Drive

Connecting directly to a drive is recommended only when a remote session is inconvenient or not available. To access your drives, do the following:

From the Faculty/Staff Resources page, click "Remote File Access". You will be prompted for your username and password.

On the resulting page, you should see a list of drives available to you. To connect directly to a network drive (P:, S:, T:), click on the desired drive link.

You will be prompted to enter your username and password each time you open a new document.

Note to Windows XP Users: Use "HILLSDALE\username". For example: John Doe would enter his username as "HILLSDALE\jdoe". It's important that you use the backward slash (\) and not the forward slash (/).

Note to Macintosh Users: Macintosh users need to use the WebDAV client Goliath. After downloading the client, do the following:

  1. From the File menu in Goliath, select Open.
  2. Check the box for Open as Web Folder.
  3. In the Open dialog box type in https://fs1.hillsdale.edu/ and then enter your Hillsdale network user name (typically your first initial and last name).
  4. Click OK.

When you are done working with your files, simply close your Internet connection.
