Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History, 3225 Fourth Street, Jackson, MI 49203
Elementary classes and homeschoolers (grades 2-5) will learn about the history of the Underground Railroad in Jackson, and how a secret code of quilt patterns may have helped set escaping slaves on the right path. Ella Sharp brings the program to the classroom, saving schools all transportation costs. Students will learn about the Underground Railroad, Jackson's role in the anti-slavery movement, and engage in a "make and take" art project. Activities will last about an hour.
Docent responsibilities are: Become fluent in the history of the Underground Railroad and the anti-slavery movement, specifically as it pertains to Jackson and local history, through training, additional reading and learning materials, and working with historic artifacts; be able to communicate with school children using age-appropriate language, actively engage learning through dialogue, discovery, and story-telling, and guide children through hands-on activities.
Time commitment: February 20 through March 2, 2012, and Monday-Friday by appointment.

Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History, 3225 Fourth Street, Jackson, MI 49203
Since 1975, Ella Sharp Museum's Pioneer Living program has delighted and educated second and third grade classes with a full day field trip of lively activities. Students will churn butter in the log cabin, write their lessons on a slate in the old Dibble schoolhouse, and try their hands at bartering, weaving, or woodworking. The museum's historic buildings bring early Jackson to life in a vivid and immediate way.
Docent responsibilities are: Become fluent in the interpretation of all historic buildings including the log cabin, one-room schoolhouse, wood shop, print shop, barns, doctor's office, general store, and Hillside Farmhouse; become fluent in the nuances of pioneer life through training, additional reading and learning materials, and working with historic artifacts related to pioneer life; conduct tours and guide children through hands-on activities including learning about life in a pioneer log cabin, learning about nineteenth century general store activities, conducting school lessons in a one-room schoolhouse, churning butter, weaving on a loom, working in the woodshop with early woodworking tools, playing with early toys and games, and completing pioneer chores; be able to communicate with school children using age-appropriate language, actively engage learning through dialogue and discovery; and dress in pioneer costume.
Time commitment: February 28 through June 1, 2012, Tuesday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Docents may choose which days and how many days they would like to work per week, based on their availability.
