No. 8 Grand Valley State sweeps Charger volleyball team, 3-0 in Allendale
October 4, 2008 - For the second time in three weeks, the Charger volleyball team comes home from a road weekend without a win.
Saturday afternoon, the No. 8-ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers defeated Hillsdale 3-0, with set scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-19. The Chargers have lost five of their past six matches, and are now 12-7 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC. The team is back home next weekend to host Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State.
The Lakers played a brilliant offensive match, recording 49 kills against just nine attack errors for a .374 attack percentage for the match. Hillsdale had three players hit better than .275 in the match, but it couldn't match up with the firepower of the Lakers, who have won 27 straight matches at home.
Junior Kittrick Smith led Hillsdale in kills for the second straight match, getting eight against just one attack error, for a .412 attack percentage. Smith also led the team with two block assists.
Freshman Clara Leutheuser added seven kills and hit .316 for the match. Junior Emily Bennett had six kills and hit .286 for the Chargers.
Sophomore Sydney Dow led the team with 17 digs, while setter Stephanie Booms dished out 27 assists.
Grand Valley's Rebeccah Rapin, last year's GLIAC Freshman of the Year, had a team-high 12 kills with no errors and hit .667 for the match.
