VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW: Hillsdale looks to rebound with home matches vs. Lake Superior State, Saginaw Valley State
October 8, 2008 - The Hillsdale College volleyball team has been knocked back a couple pegs in recent weeks, having lost five out of its past six matches. This weekend, the Chargers are back at home and lookingto resume their winning ways.
Friday night, Hillsdale will host Lake Superior State inside the Jesse Philips Arena at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. match vs. the much-improved Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals on Saturday will follow.
Hillsdale is 12-7 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC. Despite the losing conference record, the Chargers sit just one game out of first place in the GLIAC South Division. A pair of wins this weekend could put the team in position to reclaim first place.
Last weekend, the Chargers struggled in a pair of road matches against Ferris State and Grand Valley State University, losing decisions of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. But Hillsdale is now at a point in the schedule where it only has one more weekend of road matches in conference play, and it can make up some of the ground it's lost during the recent losing skid.
If history is any indication, the Chargers have a strong chance of going 2-0 this weekend. Against both Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State, Hillsdale is a combined 30-5 dating back to the 1994 season. The Chargers haven't lost to the Lakers since 2002, while Hillsdale has won 12 straight against the Cardinals.
However, past performance is not indicative of future gains, as the stock market has so harshly shown people in recent weeks. Hillsdale hadn't lost to either Northwood or Wayne State since the 2003 season, and both teams beat the Chargers three weeks ago.
Saginaw Valley State in particular, has improved greatly as a program under head coach Will Stanton in recent years. SVSU suffered a 40-plus match GLIAC losing streak earlier this decade, but a 12-3 start to this season, plus a school-record 20 wins in

2007, show that the Cardinals are a rising volleyball power in the GLIAC.
This weekend will be a special one around the home volleyball matches, because the Chargers aer participating in the Dig Pink promotion, for breast cancer awareness. Donations will be accepted at the apparel table at both matches, and the players' pink jerseys, which they will wear Saturday, will be up for auction.
