October 31, 2008 - In front of the loudest - and best-dressed - crowd of the season, the Hillsdale College volleyball team played with sharpness and intensity in recording a 3-0 win over the University of Findlay Friday night at Jesse Philips Arena.
The Chargers have now won six straight matches and are 19-8 overall and 8-6 in the GLIAC. Findlay falls to 11-18 on the season with the loss. Hillsdale is off on Saturday and resumes GLIAC play with a pair of home matches next weekend against Northwood and Wayne State.
Playing in front of almost 500 fans, the Chargers' skill and power was on full display, as they put together one of their most complete efforts of the season. Hillsdale won the three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-17.
The Chargers got off to big early leads in the first two sets and were in full control of each from start to finish. Hillsdale hit .448 as a team in the first set, recording 15 kills against just two errors.
Freshman Ashlee Crowder contrinued her remarkable rookie campaign with another outstanding performance. She finished with 15 kills and a .414 attack percentage to lead the team. Setters Stephanie Booms and Apryl Schmucker did a nice job of setting Crowder up in several different spots along the net for her attack attempts. The setters also read the Findlay defense nicely in putting the Charger hitters in good position for kill shots.
Junior Kitt Smith, who celebrated her 20th birthday Friday night, was also on her game, finishing with 11 kills.
Booms, the reigning GLIAC South Division Player of the Week, had 34 assists (more than 11 per set), to go along with four kills and four digs. Schmucker, who has gradually improved as the season has moved along, had two kills, five assists, two service aces and six digs. She was also in on two block assists.
Sophomore Sydney Dow played another strong game on the back line with 19 digs. She also delivered two service aces. Junior Emily Bennett had an errorless match, with four kills, one solo block and two block assists.
Hillsdale has now defeated Findlay in nine of the past 10 meetings between the teams, dating back to the 2004 GLIAC Tournament.
