November 15, 2008 - The Hillsdale College women's basketball team couldn't have asked for a much better start to the 2008-09 season.
Thanks to a team-record 30 assists and remarkable crispness for a season opener, the Chargers went to 1-0 on the season with a 104-62 win over Oakland City University in Rolla, Missouri Saturday afternoon. Hillsdale will take on the host Miners, an NCAA regional team from a year ago, at 5 p.m. Sunday.
The 30 assists by the team in the game set a new school record, and the 104 points scored are the second-most in school history. The record for points in a game is 110 vs. Siena Heights, set on Dec. 7, 2002.
Hillsdale took control of the game from the opening moments and never let up throughout the contest. The Chargers held a 46-28 lead at halftime, and with the starters playing few minutes in the second half, actually increased that lead as the game moved along.
Freshman guard Chelsea Harrison, making her collegiate debut, was brilliant with 20 points in 23 minutes, including six 3-point baskets. Her six 3-pointers were one shy of the single-game school record of seven, held by several players.
Senior forward Katie Cezat led the team with 22 points and 14 rebounds in 28 minutes of action. She also had six offensive rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Junior guard Janay Miller had a career-high eight assists to lead Hillsdale in that category. She started the game strong and helped set an aggressive tone for the Chargers in the game. Miller ended up with nine points and five boards in addition to her eight assists.
Senior Katie Eckinger made her first collegiate start and had nine points on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Claire Aubrey was the third player to hit double figures in scoring for Hillsdale, with 10 points.
Hillsdale shot 54 percent from the field and 64 percent (9-for-14) in 3-pointers. The team's 3-point percentage was two points short of the school record, and the team's 40 field goals made in the game are two less than the school record for a game (42), set on two occasions.
