November 22, 2008 - A 22-7 run to open the second half helped propel the Hillsdale College men's basketball team to a runaway victory over the University of Indianapolis on the road Saturday night, 75-55. The Chargers are now 2-0 on the season and return home Tuesday night for their third straight game against a GLVC foe, Bellarmine University, starting at 7 p.m.
Playing its first road game of the regular season, the Chargers played with energy and focus, taking control of the game early and forcing Indianapolis to play at an uncomfortable tempo throughout the contest. Hillsdale gradually built its first half lead, not with big scoring binges, but by grinding out a lead that ended up at 11 points at halftime, 47-36.
Then, in the second half, Hillsdale made its big run. A 3-point basket by senior guard Keith MacKenzie extended Hillsdale's lead to 19 points less than three minutes into the second half. MacKenzie drained another three a minute later to give the Chargers their first 20-point lead of the game.
The Greyhounds couldn't draw much closer the rest of the way, as Hillsdale's lead grew to as many as 30 in the second half.
The Charger defense was playing at full tilt in this game, holding Indianapolis to 28 percent shooting for the game. Hillsdale also outrebounded the Greyhounds 49-36 in the game.
MacKenzie finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Senior Tony Gugino led the Chargers with 20 points in the game, adding nine rebounds and three assists to his stat line.
Senior center Chris Skaggs came off the bench to pop in eight points in 14 minutes of action. Freshman Brad Guinane added nine points for Hillsdale.
