December 4, 2008 - Balance and killer instinct were on the side of the Hillsdale College men's basketball team Thursday night, as the Chargers won their first GLIAC contest of the season, 85-67, over visiting Lake Superior State University.
The Chargers are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC after the victory at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale will travel north this weekend to face Saginaw Valley State University at 4 pm.. Sunday afternoon.
After a closely played first half, the Charger offense lit up the Lakers for 49 second-half points and a 13-point scoring edge in the final 20 minutes. The Chargers were able to execute their offense to an effective degree with many different players chipping in with strong play to help Hillsdale pull away with the win.
Playing his finest game in his short Hillsdale College career,

junior forward Luke Laser excited the big crowd in his hometown with an excellent all-around performance.
Laser scored all eight of the Chargers' points in a key 8-0 first-half run that broke open a tie game. Laser finished with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 21 solid minutes off the bench. He hit a 3-pointer and pulled up for open jump shots in putting together his best offensive game of the season.
Freshman forward Brad Guinane also played with a new comfort level and aggression at both ends of the court for the Chargers. He finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Guinane and Laser each went 6-for-7 from the field, showing excellent decision-making skills with the basketball.
After getting off to a frustrating start to the game, senior Tony Gugino exercised his will over the Laker defense in the second half. After the Lakers cut Hillsdale's lead to six points with 15:02 left in the second half, the Chargers went on a 24-10 burst over an eight-minute span to enjoy a comfortable 20-point lead. Gugino scored eight of his team-high 20 points during that 24-10 run, showing the leadership and shot-making ability that make him one of the best post players in the GLIAC.
Gugino also had a team-best 12 rebounds in the victory.
Freshman guard Tyler Gerber added 12 points in 24 minutes off the bench for Hillsdale.
