December 7, 2008 - Sunday afternoon's women's basketball game between Hillsdale College and Saginaw Valley State University wasn't decided at the beginning or end, but in the middle.
The Chargers put a 40-4 run on the host Cardinals between the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to cruise to a 74-38 victory in Saginaw. The win improves the No. 10-ranked Chargers to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC.
Both teams struggled to convert field goal attempts in the game's first 10 minutes. With Hillsdale clinging to a 10-7 lead, it was junior guard Janay Miller who provided the spark of energy and scoring the Chargers needed.
Miller nailed three 3-point field goals on three straight possessions to help start the 40-4 run. On the fourth possession after her shots, she dished off an assist on a layup made by senior Katie Cezat to grow Hillsdale's lead from three to 16 points in a span of less than three minutes.
Hillsdale went on runs of 13-0 and 10-2 to close out the first half with a 33-11 lead. The Chargers then scored the first 17 straight points of the second half, building the lead to 50-11. The Chargers led by as many as 42 points in the second half as the team's reserves got plenty of playing time.
The run began at the 9:10 mark of the first half and ended seven minutes into the second half.
Miller led the team in scoring with a season-high 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. She swished a career-high five 3-point field goals, making all of her attempts from beyond the stripe.
Cezat helped keep the team's 40-4 run moving with a short, but dominant stretch of play in the second half. She finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Cezat now has 958 points in her career, and could eclipse the 1,000-point barrier before Christmas.
Senior Claire Aubrey and sophomore Laura Barczak each had eight points, with Aubrey adding seven rebounds and five assists in a well-controlled performance. Barczak also grabbed seven rebounds for Hillsdale.
