Top-ranked Findlay men defeat Hillsdale, 70-56
December 18, 2008 - In the first five minutes of Thursday night's men's basketball game between Hillsdale College and the University of Findlay, the visiting Oilers showed just how good they can be.

Playing to near-perfection on both ends of the court, the Oilers stormed out to an 18-1 lead over the host Chargers. Hillsdale was able to regain some composure and actually outscored the Oilers over the game's final 35 minutes, but it wasn't enough, as Findlay came away with a 70-56 victory over Hillsdale. news story image

The Chargers are now 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the GLIAC. Findlay won its eighth game in a row, and sits one game up in first place in the GLIAC South Division with a 5-0 mark.

Findlay couldn't have been much hotter to open the game, making six of its first eight shots, including all four from 3-point land, in the game's first five minutes.

Findlay's lead grew to as high as 19 before Hillsdale started finding some openings in the Oiler defense. In a five-minute stretch of the first half, the Chargers cut the Oiler lead from 19 to 11 after a big dunk by Tony Gugino and a driving layup by Joe Caruso.

Caruson was one of three young players who accounted very well of themselves for the Chargers in a game where they played against the best team in the nation. Caruso played with fire and was in attack mode with the ball on offense throughout his 13 minutes on the court. Caruso dished out three assists and put consistent pressure on All-GLIAC guard Marcus Parker of Findlay.

Two freshmen also played some of their most aggressive basketball of the season for Hillsdale. Point guard Tyler Gerber played 19 minutes, recording five points and three assists while forcing a couple of turnovers and played tough defense against the bigger Oilers.

Forward Brad Guinane came out in the second half playing with poise and intelligence, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds and one steal in 25 minutes.

Hillsdale outscored Findlay 35-30 in the second half.

Gugino, who has seen plenty of the Oilers during his career, stepped up to the challenge of playing Findlay's huge frontline of Josh Bostic and Lee Roberts. Gugino led Hillsdale with 21 points and nine rebounds in the game.

Bostic had 18 points to lead Hillsdale, while teammate Morgan Lewis played an outstanding game with 17 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the floor.

It doesn't get much easier for Hillsdale this weekend, as the Chargers will face 21st-ranked Grand Valley State in Allendale at 8 p.m. Saturday night.
