Charger women pound Wayne State, 79-62
12-1 record is the best 13-game start in school history
January 10, 2009 – Katie Cezat seems to enjoy playing against Wayne State University.

Coming off three incredibly productive games against the Warriors in 2007-08, Cezat delivered more pain to WSU Saturday, scoring a game-high 31 points to lead the Chargers to a 79-62 win in Detroit.

Hillsdale is ranked seventh in the nation and is now 12-1 on the season, and 7-1 in the GLIAC. The Chargers have won five out of six conference games on the road this season, and the 12-1 start represents the team’s best 13-game record in school history.

In four games against the Warriors since the start of last season, Cezat has scored a total of 133 points. In the game, Cezat moved into eighth place on Hillsdale’s career scoring leader list, and now sits in seventh place on the all-time field goals made list in school history. Cezat played 31 minutes, scoring a point-a-minute, including eight rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots.

Cezat scored 21 of her points in an absolutely brilliant first half of team basketball by Hillsdale. The Chargers shot 60 percent from the field en route to building a 47-25 lead at intermission. Those 47 points were the most scored in the first half of any game by the Chargers this season.

Hillsdale was able to control the tempo of the game and exploited every weakness it found in the Wayne State defense. Guards Brooke Knight, Claire Aubrey and Janay Miller did an outstanding job of making good decisions with the basketball, carving up Wayne State’s defense for quality shot attempts by the Chargers.

Miller played her second straight strong contest for Hillsdale, finishing with 15 points. She was a key to Hillsdale’s great start, scoring nine points in the first half while giving the Chargers points from the perimeter. She also had five rebounds and two assists in another excellent effort.

Playing in front of more than 25 family members, Aubrey was terrific on both ends of the court, getting 13 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes. She scored seven points in a row late in the first half when the Chargers were able to extend their lead beyond 20 points.

Junior guard Brooke Knight had her second double-digit assist game of the season, finishing with six points, 10 assists, five rebounds and three steals.

After nearly a month on the road, Hillsdale will be back at home Thursday night, hosting the 16th-ranked Michigan Tech University Huskies in a key GLI:AC showdown starting at 6 p.m.
