Huskies upend Charger women on last-second shot
January 15, 2009 - Michigan Tech's Lisa Staehlin made a layup with :00.4 seconds left in Thursday night's thrilling women's basketball game to give the Huskies a 54-52 win over Hillsdale College inside the Jesse Philips Arena. news story image

Staehlin converted a layup off a haflcourt inbounds pass from Alicia Schneider on a perfectly executed play to give the 15th-ranked Huskies the win over the No. 4-ranked Chargers.

The game was a tough, defensive struggle the entire way, with neither team gaining a lead bigger than seven points. The game was tied 11 times and there were 14 lead changes in this battle of nationally ranked teams.

Hillsdale had the ball after a miss by the Huskies and were running upcourt for the potential game-winning shot with less than 10 seconds left in the game. But guard Brooke Knight was called for an offensive foul after releasing a pass at the midcourt stripe, stopping the clock with two seconds remaining.

Michigan Tech took possession at halfcourt and made the game-winning basket.

The game was evenly played throughout, with MTU holding a 30-28 halftime lead. Hillsdale opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a brief four-point lead. But Michigan Tech responded with an 11-0 run later in the half to regain the lead.

Charger forward Katie Cezat stepped up big with clutch free throws down the stretch that kept the home team in position to win. Cezat finished the game with 17 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots, battling against one of the most talented front lines in the GLIAC.

Knight had 11 points, three assists and three rebounds for Hillsdale, while junior Janay Miller added 10 points and six rebounds, five coming on the offensive end.

Hillsdale shot 32 percent from the floor in the game, but outrebounded Michigan Tech 45-28 in the contest.

Katie Wysocky had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Huskies.
