Men's basketball team completes U.P. sweep with win over Michigan Tech
February 21, 2009 – An outstanding defensive game by the Hillsdale College men’s basketball team helped lead the Chargers to a 64-56 win over Michigan Tech University in Houghton Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers are now 14-10 overall and 12-8 in the GLIAC, and in sole possession of fourth place overall in the conference. Hillsdale is still in position to host a first-round GLIAC Tournament game for the first time. The win also avenges a 69-61 home loss to the Huskies back on Jan. 15.
Hillsdale held Michigan Tech to 0-for-13 shooting from 3-point territory in the game, and the Huskies shot just 35 percent from the field overall in the game. The Chargers did an outstanding job on the defensive boards, limiting the Huskies to eight offensive rebounds on 39 missed shots in the game.
After Michigan Tech took an early lead, Hillsdale grabbed the lead thanks to three straight 3-point baskets by sophomore guard Joe Caruso. His shots brought Hillsdale to a 23-17 lead with 6:44 left in the first half.
The Chargers played a steady first half, holding a 32-28 edge at intermission. Hillsdale’s non-starters contributed 20 of the team’s 32 points in the game’s opening 20 minutes, with nine of those coming from the hot right hand of Caruso.
The Chargers maintained their offensive balance in the second half. After scoring just two points in the first half, senior Tony Gugino scored eight of his 10 points in the second half, converting his inside attempts. He had a baseline slam dunk that stopped momentum the Huskies had been building up in the first part of the second half.
Freshman Brad Guinane scored five straight points during a 7-0 Hillsdale run that gave the Chargers a 52-39 lead with 8:09 left in the game, the Chargers’ biggest lead of the game to that point. Senior guard Evan Steward also contributed a key 3-point basket in the second half, that gave the Chargers a 13-point lead with 5:54 to play.
Keith MacKenzie and Guinane shared scoring lead honors for Hillsdale with 12 points apiece. Junior Luke Laser and freshman guard Tyler Gerber each grabbed seven rebounds for Hillsdale.
The Charger non-starters outscored Michigan Tech’s 33-24 in the game. Hillsdale was 8-for-19 from 3-point land, outscoring the Huskies 24-0 in that category.
Hillsdale will host Tiffin and Ashland at home to wrap up the regular season next week.
