A special Senior Day: Charger women pound Ashland, 81-55
Cezat's 41 points leads Hillsdale to 24th win
February 28, 2009 - Senior Day is always a day of thanks and emotion in college athletics, and Saturday afternoon, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team channeled its emotion into a superb effort against Ashland University.

The Chargers led from start to finish in an 81-55 win over the Eagles before more than 900 rabid fans at the Jesse Philips news story imageArena. Hillsdale set a new team record with its 24th win of the season, and finishes the regular season at 24-3 overall and 19-3 in the GLIAC.

The Chargers will host Lake Superior State University in the first round of the 2009 GLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 3.

Hillsdale, ranked No. 8 in the nation, maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, and executed brilliantly at both ends of the court against an Eagles team that had come into the game on a 7-1 roll in their past eight games. Leading the team's play on the offensive end of the court was All-American senior Katie Cezat, who put together another performance for the ages.

Cezat finished with 41 points and 17 rebounds, making 15-of-24 shots from the floor. She came within one point of her own school record for points in a game, and tied the school record for field goals made in a game. She also had five assists, three blocked shots and two steals while playing 38 minutes.

With the end of this regular season, Cezat officially writes her name into the GLIAC record book many times. She set new conference single-season records for points (656), scoring average (29.8), rebounds (393), rebounding average (17.9), blocked shots (82), field goals made (235), and free throws made (181).

Defensively, the Chargers harassed the Eagles into 34 percent shooting for the game, and forced 19 turnovers in the contest. Hillsdale opened up a 17-5 lead in the game's first six minutes.

Junior guard Brooke Knight had 13 points, six assists and four steals while forcing the Ashland guards into tough nights shooting the basketball. Senior Claire Aubrey added 12 points and four rebounds to Hillsdale's winning effort. Senior Katie Eckinger hit a 3-poointer on the first possession of the game, setting a strong tone for the team, and finished with seven points.

Hillsdale swept the season series with the Lakers, winning at home 71-61 on Dec. 4, and 61-49 on the road Jan. 31.
