Men's basketball team charges into GLIAC Tournament with 89-63 rout of Ashland
Hillsdale to host Michigan Tech at 8 p.m. Tuesday
February 28, 2009 - There isn't a much better way to go into a postseason than the way the Hillsdale College men's basketball team is going.

The Chargers raced out to an incredible 18-0 lead en route to an 89-63 victory over Ashland University before more than 1,000 fans Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 16-10 overall and finishes GLIAC play with a 14-8 conference news story imageledger.

The Chargers will host their first-ever GLIAC Tournament game at 8 p.m. Tuesday against Michigan Tech.

Hillsdale played a nearly perfect first 15 minutes of the game, when it built up a mind-boggling 40-6 lead over Ashland. The Chargers were running up and down the floor, making their 3-point shots, and taking advantage of every opening the Eagle defense gave them in building up a 34-point lead before halftime.

Although the Eagles closed the gap to 23 by halftime, the second half wasn't much different, as Hillsdale showed little letdown in the game's final 20 minutes, outscoring Ashland 45-42 in the second half.

Three of the team's five seniors, who were honored in a pre-game ceremony, scored in double figures and all played very well throughout the game.

Senior Tony Gugino capped his home regular season career with one of his best games of the season, getting 28 points and 16 rebounds, along with three blocked shots. He matched his season-high for rebounds, set on Feb. 19 at Northern Michigan.

Senior Keith MacKenzie was on-target with his outside shot, getting 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point land. MacKenzie also picked up four rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Chargers.

Senior Travis Worst played another scrappy game, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists in 30 effective minutes on the court.

Senior Chris Skaggs contributed eight points and three rebounds, while senior guard Evan Steward set a new season-high with eight assists, to go along with five points and two steals.

The Chargers enter the GLIC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, and will face sixth-seeded Michigan Tech in the first round Tuesday night. The two teams split their regular season matchups, each winning on the road.
