April 15, 2009 - The Charger softball team lost a pair of one-run games to GLIAC foe Ashland on Wednesday afternoon. Both games featured strong pitching performances with only two total runs being scored. Unfortunately for the Chargers, both of those runs were scored by the Eagles of Ashland.
In the first game the Chargers were led by freshman Laura Homan in one of her strongest outings of the year. Homan scattered eight hits and struck out four, keeping the Eagles off the board until the seventh inning.
The Eagles executed well, moving the runner into scoring position and using a pinch hit single to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Chargers were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, giving the Eagles the 1-0 win.

On the mound for the Eagles was Emlyn Knerem. She held the Chargers to only two hits while striking out 13 Chargers.
Picking up those two hits for the Chargers were sophomore Jordan Kellie and senior Britt Sevey.
The nightcap was much like the first. Both pitchers dominated the game, again keeping the game scoreless until the seventh inning.
Senior Jamie Vandenburgh took the tough loss after 6 1/3 innings of work, allowing nine hits and striking out six.
The Chargers defense shined in both games, making several tough plays including throwing out the go-ahead run at the plate in the sixth inning. On a single up the middle the Chargers executed the relay perfectly, tagging the pinch runner out at home.
However, the Eagles were again able to move runners into scoring position in the seventh and come up with the timely hit, earning the walk-off win.
With the losses the Chargers fall to 11-21 (5-15 GLIAC), while the Eagles improve to 25-9 (13-3 GLIAC),
The Chargers next play at Indianapolis this Thursday, April 16.
