Chargers sweep Saturday foes to finish 3-1 at the University of Findlay volleyball tournament
Sept. 5, 2009 - A pair of 3-0 sweeps concluded non-league play for the Hillsdale College volleyball team, as the Chargers finished strong in Saturday's portion of the University of Findlay Tournament.
Hillsdale swept both Southern Indiana and Minnesota-Crookston to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Chargers open GLIAC play next weekend with a road trip through Ohio, facing Tiffin Friday and Ashland Saturday.
The Chargers downed USI by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-18. Balance on offense was a key to this win, as six players had four or more kills in the match, led by Ashlee Crowder's 13.
Frontline blocking continued to be a strength for the Chargers, as they outblocked USI 9-4 in the match. Sophomore Clara Leutheuser, who had the best weekend of her career, had five block assists, and Lauren Grover and Apryl Schmucker each had one solo block and two block assists.
Grover had nine kills with just one attack error, while Leutheuser contributed eight kills.
In Saturday's second match, the Chargers were challenged by Minnesota-Crookston in a 26-24 win in the second set. But the first and third sets were a different story, as Hillsdale cruised to wins of 25-13 and 25-15, respectively.
Hillsdale hit a season-best .366 for the match, as six players hit .400 or better. Six different players had service aces, and five different players recorded a block of some kind for Hillsdale in the match.
Leutheuser had a team-high nine kills, while junior Amanda Bigney had seven kills and only one error.
Morgan Podkul led the Chargers with 11 digs, and Schmucker handed out 34 assists in the win.

Sept. 4, 2009 - The Hillsdale College volleyball team is making its annual appearance at the University of Findlay Tournament this weekend. And sophomore Clara Leutheuser made quite a name for herself at this year's tournament.
The 6-foot middle hitter from Hillsdale Academy High School piled up an eye-popping 37 kills in the Chargers' two matches Friday afternoon. Unfortunatley, Hillsdale College settled for a 1-1 record on the day against a pair of regional opponents from the GLVC.
Hillsdale lost a couple of leads in winding up with a 3-1 loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the day's first match. The Chargers needed to rally from a 2-1 deficit to defeat St. Joseph's College 3-2 in Friday's nightcap. The team will face Southern Indiana and Minnesota-Crookston in Saturday's action.
Although the Chargers had more kills and fewer errors as a team than UMSL, a 16-3 disadvantage in total team blocks proved to be its undoing in the match. In that contest Leutheuser set what would turn out to be a short-lived career-high in kills with 17. She also hit .517 for the match, committing just two errors.
Sophomore Ashlee Crowder had 14 kills and 16 digs for Hillsdale in the loss. Junior Sydney Dow led the team with 21 digs, while sophomore Apryl Schmucker added 40 assists.
In the late match, a tense match vs. the Pumas, the Chargers needed wins in the fourth (25-20) and fifth (15-13) sets to pull out the win. Both of Hillsdale's five-set wins this season have come with a final score of 15-13 in the decisive fifth set.
Leutheuser established a new career-best with 20 kills in the victory. But she wasn't the only one to set a new mark offensively in the match.
Freshman Lauren Grover had a terrific match from her middle hitter position, getting a career-high 12 kills, while making just one error for a .550 hitting percentage. Grover also had five total blocks, including three solos.
Sophomore Amanda Geelhoed added two solo blocks to the Chargers' effective front-line defense. Schmucker had 45 assists, and sophomore Brogan Wells had three service aces and eight digs. Crowder had her second 14-kill match of the day, and had six fewer attack errors in the day's second match compared to the first.
