Awesome start propels Charger volleyball team to 3-1 win over Tiffin in GLIAC opener
Sept. 11, 2009 - A nineteen-point margin of victory over the course of a volleyball match can fairly be considered one-sided. That was Hillsdale's margin of victory over Tiffin in the first set of Friday night's GLIAC match between the Chargers and Dragons in Ohio.

Hillsdale dominated the first set, winning 25-6 on its way to a 3-1 win in its first conference match of the season. Hillsdale is now 8-1 overall and will face Ashland University at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second half of its road trip through Ohio.

The Chargers were able to take advantage of 11 Tiffin attack errors in the first set to cruise to its most one-sided single-set win in nearly four years. The Dragons hit -.400 for the set.

But Tiffin rebounded in the second set to upend the Chargers 26-24. Hillsdale regained its dominance in the third and fourth sets, winning 25-15 and 25-13.

Hillsdale held the Dragons to a team hitting percentage of .048 for the match, and had 21 more kills and six fewer attack errors in the match. The Chargers held a 16-3 advantage in team blocks, and were plus-19 in digs.

Sophomore Ashlee Crowder was the only Hillsdale player in double digits with kills, leading all players with 17. Four other players had five or more kills, including eight each from junior Amanda Bigney and sophomore Clara Leutheuser. Freshman Lauren Grover, who has rapidly played her way into the regular rotation, had six kills and three solo blocks.

Sophomore Morgan Podkul delivered three service aces, and sophomore Apryl Schmucker had 40 assists, five kills and 13 digs. Junior Sydney Dow led the team with 22 digs. Senior Emily Bennett had two solo blocks and a career-high six block assists for the Chargers.
