Cross country teams finish in middle of the pack at tough Notre Dame Invitational
October 3, 2009 - The Hillsdale College cross country teams made their annual trek to the University of Notre Dame Friday afternoon, and competed at that school's invitational.

The Charger men finshed 12th out of 21 competing teams at the invite. Senior Timothy Howse was the top runner for the Chargers, taking 34th overall with a time of 25:40.

The next four top runners for Hillsdale all finished in the top half of the race individually. There were 173 runners in the race, and the Chargers' fifth-place runner, Jacob Secor, took 84th place. Rounding out Hillsdale's top five were Alex Ralston (2nd), Chuck Wysong (3rd) and Britton Deuel (4th).

The women's team, currently ranked 17th in the Division II national poll, finished squarely in the middle of the 20-team field at 10th place.

Turning in her finest performance of the season was Ashley Quick, who led the team with a personal-best time of 18:40. Her run was good for 31st overall in the race.

Two more runners also turned in career-best times. Erin Brunko was second on the team and 35th overall with a time of 18:48. Francesca Frasier was third on the team and 56th overall with a time of 19:09.

Taking fourth and fifth on the team were Erin Cvengros (19:10) and Jennifer Shaffer (19:22). Shaffer was 71st in a race that had 162 total runners, making the top five women all finishing in the top half of the race, just like their friends on the men's team.

"Notre Dame is a prestigious meet and anytime we can finish in the top 10, we're extremely proud," said assistant coach Sarah Hinkley.
