October 9, 2009 - Friday nights have been kind to the Hillsdale College volleyball team.
One week after defeating Grand Valley State for just the second time in 20 years, the Hillsdale College volleyball team earned

another crucial GLIAC win on a Friday night, this one in the form of a 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State University on the road.
All three sets were tightly played, with the Chargers winning by scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-23. Hillsdale is now 15-3 overall and 8-2 in the GLIAC South Division. Thanks to Wayne State's loss to Northern Michigan, the Chargers now hold a two-game lead in its effort to reclaim the South Division championship.
The Chargers' defense played a key role in this win, as it forced the Cardinals, one of the most powerful offensive teams in the conference, into a team hitting percentage of .098 in the match. Hillsdale's nine team blocks, including five total from sophomore Clara Leutheuser (pictured), was an important factor in the match.
Leutheuser had two solo blocks and three block assists for the Chargers. Freshman Lauren Grover had a team-high four block assists, while senior Hannah Barrett and sophomore Apryl Schmucker each had three block assists. Blocking was a weakness with the 2008 team, but that aspect of the team's play has been its most improved in 2009.
The win was also important for Hillsdale in the race for the GLIAC's top overall record. The Chargers and Cardinals entered Friday's match tied with identical 7-2 records in the GLIAC. Hillsdale's win not only puts the team a game ahead of SVSU, but earns the Chargers the tiebreaking checkmark over the Cardinals.
Junior captain Sydney Dow led the team with 10 digs and had two service aces in addition to providing strong defensive play to the team. Schmucker also had 10 digs and handed out 30 assists in the match.
Sophomore Ashlee Crowder led the team with 14 kills. Leutheuser had nine and junior Amanda Bigney chipped in with five kills.
The Chargers will face Lake Superior State University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
