Times and opponents set for Charger volleyball team in this weekend's GLIAC/GLVC Challenge
October 11, 2009 - This weekend, the Hillsdale College volleyball team takes a break from conference play to participate in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge.
This is the second year for the inter-conference, two-day event, which this year, will take place at Aim High, located on the west side of Lansing.
Hillsdale opens play at 1:30 p.m. Friday against St. Joseph's College. The Chargers will then play the University of Indianapolis at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The team wraps up play at the challenge tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with a match vs. Northern Kentucky University.
Hillsdale enters the challenge tournament as the number one seed from the GLIAC. The tournament format is structured so that teams from one conference play opponents in the same approximate place in the standings from the other conference.
The Chargers, as the top seed from the GLIAC, do not play Lewis, the top seed from the GLVC, but play three of the top five teams from the GLVC, in this case, Indianapolis, St. Joseph's and Northern Kentucky.
The Chargers played St. Joseph's College once already this season, winning a 3-2 decision at the University of Findlay tournament last month. Hillsdale last played Indianapolis in the first round of the 2007 Great Lakes Regional Tournament, losing 3-1 to the Greyhounds at Grand Valley State University.
The last time the Chargers played Northern Kentucky was at the Ashland University Tournament early in the 2007 season. Again, the Chargers were on the losing end of a 3-1 decision to the Norse in that matchup.
But this is 2009, and Hillsdale has raced out to the front of the pack in the GLIAC. Hillsdale's 16-3 overall record and 9-2 conference mark are both the best of any GLIAC team. Hillsdale is coming off a very impressive showing in a pair of matches on the road this weekend, sweeping both Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State. SVSU was the first-place team in the GLIAC North Division.
The Chargers hold a three-game lead in the race for first place in the GLIAC South Division over second-place Wayne State.
This is the second year of the crossover tournament between these two neighboring conferences. Last year's event took place in Indianapolis, and the GLIAC held a huge edge over the GLVC in matches won by its member schools.
