Charger volleyball team back on winning track after 3-0 win over Tiffin
Hillsdale clinches first-round home match
October 23, 2009 - After back-to-back losses to end last weekend, the Hillsdale College volleyball team got just what the doctor ordered Friday night.

The Chargers won their 10th conference match of the season, news story image sweeping Tiffin University 3-0 before more than 500 fans at the Jesse Philips Arena Friday night.

Hillsdale, ranked 23rd in the nation, is now 18-5 overall and 10-2 in conference play. The win earned the Chargers a home match in the first round of the 2009 GLIAC Tournament, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The Chargers won the sets by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-13. Hillsdale held Tiffin to a negative team hitting percentage for the match, although the Dragons passed well and played hard despite losing their 12th straight conference match of the season.

Hillsdale was able to spread the wealth offensively. Sophomore Ashlee Crowder led the team with 11 kills, and five players had four or more kills for the Chargers in the match.

Sophomore Clara Leutheuser was the dominant force at the net for the Chargers with seven kills and nine total blocks - three solo and six assists. Sophomore setter Apryl Schmucker added seven kills, 26 assists, 11 digs and three service aces.

Seniors Emily Bennett and Hannah Barrett were honored before the match as part of senior night, and both played well. Bennett had four kills, no errors on six attempts, while Barrett had two kills, five digs and two block assists.

Hillsdale will host Ashland University at noon Saturday.
