Ashland tops Charger volleyball team for first time in three years
October 24, 2009 - For the first time since the 2006 postseason, the Ashland University volleyball team beat Hillsdale College. news story image

The Eagles played with emotion and executed well en route to a 3-1 win over the Chargers Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale falls to 18-6 overall and 10-3 in the GLIAC with the loss.

Hillsdale's lone win came in the second set, by the score of 25-18. Ashland won the other sets 25-18, 25-23 and 25-22. The Chargers will play just one match next weekend, at the University of Findlay at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Ashland outblocked Hillsdale 11-8 and committed five fewer attack errors in the match than the Chargers. The third and fourth sets were very tightly played, but the Eagles scored the points at the most critical times to pick up the win.

Sophomore Ashlee Crowder led Hillsdale with 18 kills. Sophomore Clara Leutheuser had 15 kills, four total blocks and hit .400 for the match. Sophomore Apryl Schmucker added eight kills, 35 assists and 12 digs to the Charger effort.

Four of Hillsdale's six losses this season have occured on Saturdays. Two of those four losses were at home.
