October 30, 2009 - After a 3-2 loss to the University of Findlay Friday night, it's unlikely the Hillsdale College volleyball team was much in the mood to celebrate anything. But the night brought an achievement despite the loss.
Thanks to Ashland's win over Wayne State, Hillsdale clinched the 2009 GLIAC South Division championship outright. It is the Chargers' third South Division title in the past four years. Hillsdale holds a three-game lead on Ashland with two matches left to play in the regular season.
The loss, the first to Findlay in the past nine meetings between the teams, drops Hillsdale to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in the GLIAC. The team is off Saturday, and will wrap up the regular season with matches at Northwood and Wayne State next weekend.
The Chargers won the first two sets of the match, by scores of 25-13 and 25-23. In those sets, Hillsdale had just seven total hitting errors. In the last three sets, the Oilers forced the Chargers into a total of 17 attack errors, as Findlay was able to block Hillsdale's outside hitting effectively.
Findlay won the final three sets by scores of 25-16 (twice) and 15-7. The Oilers are 12-17 overall and 4-10 in the GLIAC.
Sophomore Ashlee Crowder had a team-high 15 kills for the Chargers. Sophomore Clara Leutheuser had 10 kills and no attack errors in 20 attempts, hitting .500 for the match. Junior Amanda Bigney added 12 kills for the Chargers.
Sophomore Amanda Geelhoed played in a season-high five sets, and had three block assists. Freshman Lauren Grover had a team-best four block assists. Sophomore Apryl Schmucker had 38 assists, while junior Sydney Dow led Hillsdale with 13 digs.
With the South Division title in its possession, Hillsdale is guaranteed of hosting a first-round GLIAC Tournament match on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. Hillsdale now trails Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan in the race to possibly host the conference tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 14-15.
