Volleyball team back on winning track after impressive win over Wayne State
November 6, 2009 - The Hillsdale College volleyball team returned to the scene of its last loss of 2008 during the final weekend of the 2009 season, and exorcised whatever demons remained from that defeat.

The Chargers played a terrific match in dispatching the Wayne State University Warriors 3-1 Friday night at Wayne's Matthaie Gymnasium.

The Chargers, already champions of the GLIAC South Division, improved to 19-7 overall and 11-4 in the GLIAC with the win. Hillsdale finishes up the regular season at 4 p.m. Saturday at Northwood University.

The last time Hillsdale played at Wayne State was in the first round of the 2008 GLIAC Tournament. The Warriors ended the Chargers' season that night, but on this night, it was Hillsdale who got off to an excellent start and finished off Wayne State.

Hillsdale won the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-17. Wayne State rallied for a 25-20 win in the third set, but the Charger defense took over the final set, forcing several hitting errors by the Warriors in a 25-15 triumph.

WSU hit -.065 as a team in that fourth set, as Hillsdale's blocking and serving were keys in the victory. Sophomore setter Apryl Schmucker had three straight service aces during a key sequence in the set that helped give the Chargers a sizeable advantage.

The win was important for Hillsdale, because the Chargers had endured a stretch where they lost four out of their past five, a rare extended slump for a team that seldomly went through one in recent years. The win also was the 19th of the season for Hillsdale, the sixth straight season the Chargers have hit the 19-win plateau.

Sophomore Ashlee Crowder led the team with 17 kills, and had 15 digs in one of her most complete matches in recent weeks. Schmucker had four service aces in the match, and had 37 assists, five digs and four kills.

Junior Sydney Dow had 25 digs, the second-most she's had in a match since Oct. 2. Junior Amanda Bigney had 10 kills, the fifth time in the past seven matches she's had double-digit kills.

Sophomore Clara Leutheuser had eight kills and six total blocks, while hitting .500 for the match. Sophomore Morgan Podkul turned in another solid defensive match, and had nine digs and two service aces.
