November 20, 2009 - Playing its first game of the 2009-10 regular season, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team rallied late, but lost to Minnesota State-Moorhead 72-67 Friday afternoon.
The Chargers, 0-1, will take on the host school of its season-opening tournament, Southwest Minnesota State, at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Hillsdale made just nine field goals and shot 25 percent in the first half, when it jumped out to an early nine-point lead, but fell victim to a 27-10 run that turned that lead into an eight-point deficit before halftime.
A 17-2 run to open the second half opened up the lead to 21 for Moorhead. But Hillsdale found better offensive rhythm late in the game, and cut the deficit to four points, 66-62, after two made free throws by freshman Michelle Lindsey. But it proved to be not quite enough for Hillsdale to retake the lead.
Charger senior Janay Miller led the team with a career-high 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field. She also drained three 3-point baskets. Senior guard Brooke Knight had 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Freshman Emily Anderson, getting the start in her collegiate debut, had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
