Off the schneid: Charger men's basketball team picks up first victory of season, 84-76, at SVSU
December 5, 2009 - It took three weeks and six games, but the Hillsdale College men's basketball team broke into the win column Saturday night.
Eleven different players scored points, and four had between 12 and 19 points as the Chargers defeated Saginaw Valley State University 84-76 on the road. Hillsdale, now 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC, is off for a week until it plays its home opener Dec. 12 vs. Ferris State.
It's hard to imagine many teams having a more challenging start to a season the way the Chargers have. Six straight road games, two against nationally ranked Division II teams, one against a Division I team and one against the defending GLIAC North Division champions (Lake Superior State).
But on the sixth game, the Chargers were able to take an early lead, use short bursts of hot play from different players, and finished off a Saginaw Valley State team that was fresh off a huge upset of No. 9-ranked Findlay Thursday night.
Saturday night, the two teams combined for 94 second-half points, playing to a 47-47 draw. But it was Hillsdale's 37-29 edge at halftime that ended up holding up and was equal to the margin of victory.
Hillsdale put together a solid stretch of defense to close out the first half, and to increase a one-point lead to eight by halftime. The Cardinals closed the score to 30-29 with 3:18 left in the first half. But Hillsdale shut out the home team the rest of the half, while scoring seven straight points to pick up some breathing room at halftime. Freshman guard Anthony Manno finished off the 7-0 run with a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in the first half.
The Chargers played a steady and consistent second half, never allowing the Cardinals to get closer than six points in the game's final 20 minutes.
Charger sophomore Tyler Gerber scored a team-high 19 points, hitting four of his first five shots from the field. Sophomore Brent Eaton heated up in the second half and finished with 19 also.
Freshman center Nick Washburn was 5-for-8 from the field and had 14 points in 20 productive minutes on the court. Sophomore Brad Guinane had his best all-around game of the season, with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
