December 19, 2009 - After suffering a frustrating loss Thursday night to Findlay, nothing would feel better for the Hillsdale College women's basketball team going into a two-week break than to beat its rivals from Grand Valley State.
And that's exactly what the Chargers did.
Playing a complete 40-minute game, with offensive balance and guts, Hillsdale improved to 4-1 in the GLIAC with a 66-58 victory over the Lakers Saturday night at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale

is now 4-5 overall and is off until a Jan. 2 rematch at the University of Findlay vs. the Oilers.
The Chargers opened the game sharply, quickly building a seven-point lead thanks to accurate perimeter shooting. But when Hillsdale went colder from the outside, it relied on its quickness and defense to help maintain momentum throughout the game.
The Chargers forced the Lakers into 26 turnovers and outrebounded the visitors 41-32 in the game. Neither team shot 40 percent for the game, but Hillsdale was able to make the Lakers uncomfortable running their offense, especially in the final 10 minutes of the game.
A 3-point shot by Grand Valley's Jasmin Padin made it a one-point game, 45-44, with 7:25 left in the second half. From there, the Chargers went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to expand the lead past the point of the Lakers' ability to come back. A 3-point shot by sophomore guard Chelsea Harrison and a bank shot in the pain by Amanda Geelhoed helped lead the Chargers on the game-turning run.
Sophomore Elizabeth Brannick provided key points for the Chargers down the stretch, converting an offensive rebound for a layup that helped keep the Lakers away from the lead.
For the second game in a row, freshman guard Emily Anderson led the Chargers in scoring, this time with 19 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the 3-point line. Harrison was 6-for-6 from the free throw line on her way to 16 in the game.
Geelhoed, playing her second game after joining the team this week, contributed eight points and two rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.
This win marks the third win in the last four meetings for the Chargers over the Lakers, going back to Jan. 31, 2008.
