It wasn't deja vu all over again - Lakers edge Charger men in overtime
December 19, 2009 - Nearly one year ago, the Hillsdale College men's basketball team earned one of its signature wins of that season, in overtime at home over Grand Valley State University.

Saturday's tilt between the rivals again went to overtime in news story image Hillsdale, but this time it was the Lakers coming out on top, 68-60, at Hillsdale College's Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the GLIAC, and is off until Jan. 2 when the Chargers play the University of Findlay.

For a while, Saturday's game looked a lot like last year's. Both teams had leads, both teams lost the lead, and overall, the game was very evenly played. In last year's game, Chargers guard Tyler Gerber made a basket at the regulation buzzer to force the overtime.

Gerber had a chance to win this year's game at the regulation buzzer, but his off-balance, lefthanded 3-point shot attempt rounded the rim and came out, forcing the extra session. Grand Valley's defense was able to hold Hillsdale to just one point in overtime.

A consistent force for the Lakers in the game was Justin Ringler, who led all players in scoring with 23. His drives to the hoop and his 15 rebounds and 10 free throw attempts, helped keep the Lakers in an offensive flow that Hillsdale was unable to match for the 45 minutes of the game.

The offense was spread around Hillsdale's entire lineup, with all 12 players who played scoring at least one point. Sophomore Brad Guinane led the way with 16, making three 3-point baskets. Sophomore Brent Eaton added 10, while Gerber had 10 to go along with four assists, four steals and six rebounds.
