Oilers finish season sweep of Charger women
January 2, 2010 - It was a new year, but the Hillsdale College women's basketball team could not get a new result against the University of Findlay Saturday afternoon.

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Chargers clawed back, but could not finish off the game against the Oilers on the road, losing a 67-58 decision in Findlay. Hillsdale is now 4-6 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC, and will take on Northwood University on the road Thursday night.

Playing for the first time in 14 days, Hillsdale got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the game's opening minutes. But Findlay fired back with a 21-8 run and finished the first half in control of the contest, holding a 37-31 lead.

The Oilers led by as big a score as 34-20 late in the first half, but Hillsdale used a 9-0 run to close the gap shortly before intermission. Senior Janay Miller scored five of those nine points in the first, but not the last scoring run Hillsdale would make in the game.

The Oilers held a 51-43 lead with around 10 minutes left in the game when the Chargers came back once again, this time led by a sophomore who notched new career-highs in points and rebounds in a game.

Forward Elizabeth Brannick scored six straight points, and nine in Hillsdale's 11-2 run that gave it its first lead since early in the game, 54-53. Brannick made two jump shots, a layup and buried a 3-point basket during her scoring outburst.

Each defense dominated the game through the home stretch, with the two teams combining for just seven points in a six-minute span. Brannick hit another jumper to make it a 60-58 Findlay lead with 2:06 left in the game, but those would be the final points scored by the Chargers in this game, as Findlay's Laura Bardall made a layup to increase the lead to two possessions with around a minute to go.

Brannick finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of playing time - all career-highs. Sophomore guard Chelsea Harrison led Hillsdale with 15 points, while Miller scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half.

Hillsdale forced 24 Findlay turnovers, but was outrebounded 42-25 by the home team. The Chargers also shot 35 percent for the game, while Findlay got a boost from its 55 percent shooting in the first half.
