January 2, 2010 - The second half of Saturday's men's basketball game was as cold inside Findlay's Croy Gymnasium for the Hillsdale College men's basketball team as the weather was outside.
The Chargers fell to 1-9 this season after a 60-42 loss on the road to the University of Findlay Saturday. Hillsdale, 1-5 in the GLIAC, stays on the road Thursday at Northwood before returning home Saturday, Jan. 9 to host Wayne State.
After a solid first half of play, the Chargers were held to 16 points on 5-for-22 shooting from the field in the game's final 20 minutes.
The Chargers played one of their best halves of the season in the first half, holding a 24-20 lead after a 3-pointer and a free throw by sophomore guard Tyler Gerber. Holding a lead over the Oilers in their own gym at any point in a game is a rare achievement, and Hillsdale was playing with toughness and energy to gain that lead.
But Findlay isn't the defending Division II national champions without a good reason. The Oilers went on a 12-2 run to conclude the first half with a six-point lead, 32-26.
The second half offered more of the same, as Findlay increased its lead to double digits less than four minutes into the half. A layup by Hillsdale senior Luke Laser made it a nine-point game shortly thereafter, but that would be the closest the Chargers would get to the Oilers the rest of the game.
Hillsdale hasn't beaten Findlay since January 2002.
Gerber led Hillsdale with 11 points, to go along with two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Laser added eight points for the visitors.
