January 7, 2010 - A season of improbable misfortune continued Thursday night for the Hillsdale College men's basketball team.
Northwood's Dorian Pierce banked in a 3-point shot at the buzzer to lift the host Timberwolves to a 49-46 win over the Chargers at Midland's Bennett Center.
Hillsdale is now 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the GLIAC, and is back home Saturday afternoon, hosting Wayne State University starting at 1 p.m.
Few basketball games are as tightly played as this one was. The largest lead built by either team was four points, and there were 10 tie scores throughout the game.
Charger sophomore Brad Guinane tied the game at 46-46 on a layup with 27 seconds left in the second half. With the game clock showing less time than the 35-second shot clock, Northwood was able to hold the ball for the last shot of the game.
Guinane scored eight of his 10 points in the first half, when neither team led by more than two points. Senior Tyler Brand scored a season-high 11 points for the Chargers.
Brand swished a 3-pointer to put Hillsdale in front, 44-41, with 2:22 left in the game. Two possessions later, Northwood's Lionel Sullivan converted an offensive rebound into a three-point play to knot the game at 44 apiece with 1:32 remaining.
Sophomore guard Tyler Gerber added seven assists to Hillsdale's effort. The Chargers did set a new season-low in points allowed in a game, but shot just 4-for-7 from the free throw line as a team, both season-low marks.
